The transition of substrates is described from early clay tablets (Sumerian) to papyrus rolls (Bardi) in Egypt, where they were joined into long strips and rolled into cylinders (p. 21-22). Later, manuscripts were written on parchment (Raq) and eventually paper (Waraq) and Kaghd (p. 23, 26). Thick paper (Waraq samik) was often covered with leather (p. 25). For protection, papyrus sheets were sometimes doubled or tripled before being used as a cover material (p. 22).

Remarks

In Baghdad's 'Bayt al-Hikma' during Caliph al-Ma'mun's era, specific locations were established for copying and binding books (p. 23).
