Remarks

Mahariq were a pre-paper writing material common in Iraq and the Arabian Peninsula. They consisted of white cloth sheets treated with gum (glue) and polished to create a smooth, writable surface (p. 8). They were largely replaced as papyrus and Samarkand paper became available.
