Remarks

These papers were originally large Chinese landscape and bird paintings that were fragmented and repurposed for use in Persian manuscripts (p. 169). The author notes that once fragmented, the images were rearranged, often turned on their sides, and served as supports for poetry (p. 169). This process created 'new Persianate papers' that materialize concepts of beauty through their fragmented and shimmering quality (p. 169).
