The metal wires within the mould created fine lines in the paper called laid lines which run parallel to the longer side of the mould. Chain lines are wider in appearance and run perpendicular to the laid lines (p. 97). The dominant practice of burnishing, making paper shiny and compact is also clearly observed (p. 99).

Remarks

Sample MUL 34 (Sharh al-salam al-saghir, dated 1197/1782). Paper has both laid and chain lines. Chain line frequency is 30 millimetres; laid line frequency is 3 millimetres. Media includes black and red ink. Notable for small dark brown fibre specks throughout the sheet. The watermark is described as an elongated version of the three crescents design (p. 99).
