Recipe Details

Ingredients

arsenic, soufre

Preparation Steps

The paper notes that orpiment (As2S3) was used both as a natural pigment and possibly as a synthetic one obtained through sublimation. On p. 813, it is noted that a particularly bright yellow in BGA K 421 (f. 231) might be a pigment obtained by sublimation of white arsenic and sulfur, or an ink associating organic and mineral compounds as described in the treatise of Ibn Bâdîs.

Evidence

"Celle qui a été mesurée comporte de l'arsenic et plus ou moins de soufre. Un pigment naturel, connu des peintres depuis l'Antiquité, contient ces deux éléments : l'orpiment ou trisulfure d'arsenic de formule chimique As2S3."

Remarks

Yellow is found in text zones (BGA K 421, BNF Arabe 6724, 1184, and 4527) and is dominant for vocalization marks (p. 813). It is sometimes outlined with cochineal red to enhance the decor (p. 815, Fig 3).
