Imported from Italy, specifically manufactured for the Levantine market (p. 152). Some varieties included the names of the manufacturers, such as the 'Galvani' family (p. 153).

"The wrapping paper was the same brand (tre lune) as the better sort of writing paper... Almost all writing paper had a watermark, hence our knowledge of the brands used."

Remarks

The paper was imported in bulk (reams) from Tripoli to Kano (p. 152). The 'tre lune' brand was common. The paper was noted for its quality: 'Writing paper was relatively stiff, it could be folded; it was not brittle like later paper' (p. 148). The standard size used for books was a 'quarter Mansuri', measuring approximately 213 mm by 142 mm (p. 153, 161).
