Evidence

"these bands correspond to those of vermillion. Vermillion or cinnabar is mercury (II) sulfide (HgS) that was largely used by ancient scribes because of its accessibility and its simplicity of preparation."

Remarks

Found in all studied remains as the most common bright red illumination (p. 117). The fluorescence background observed in some dark shades may be due to the binder used in the ink preparation (p. 117).
