Remarks

The coloring and compositional relationship of geometric letters to one another create 'striking optical illusions' (p. 100). Boullata uses contrasting colors and ninety-degree angles to stress the 'square' unit in square kufic (p. 97). The colors are described as unconventional with regard to the tradition of calligraphy but inspired by the tiles and glass of mosque architecture (p. 96).
