Salim bin Sa’ad Nabhan, an Arab publisher based in Surabaya, commissioned specialized papers from Germany starting around 1908 (p. 6). This paper featured a unique countermark with his name to facilitate the printing and publishing of Islamic texts for local ulamas (p. 6). One notable book published using such papers was FathulQadir in the 1920s (p. 6, note 3).

"In other manuscripts, Husnul also found the same image of the watermark as above, and even a script written Salim Nabhan as countermark... undeniably, these words referred to a name of the founder of the oldest bookstore in East Java located in Surabaya from 1908... He also ordered papers to Germany to facilitate local ulama to write, print, and publish."

Remarks

This paper type was found abundantly in South and West Sulawesi manuscripts (p. 6), indicating a wide distribution network for the materials ordered by the Salim Nabhan bookstore. The relationship between K. H. Muh As’ad al-Bugisy and Salim Nabhan was a key factor in the spread of this paper in the Bugis region (p. 6, note 4).
