Remarks

Al-Jabarti describes the physical state of historical manuscript notebooks (kararis) in Cairo during the late 18th century. He notes that many manuscripts remained in endowment libraries (khaza'in kutub al-awqaf) attached to schools (madaris). He specifically highlights that many of these manuscripts were in a tattered or dispersed state (mudashshara) due to neglect or the actions of librarians and endowment managers (al-qawama wa al-mubashirun) who sold them or allowed them to be transported to regions such as the Maghrib and Sudan (p. 11).
