The Yekşah technique involves the application of gold to tooled patterns, followed by burnishing and etching to enhance the decorative detail (p. 177). In Or. 14.366, gold was used along the edges of the covers and for a central medallion on a leather overlay.

Evidence

"The burnishing and etching of gold tooled patterns is called Yekşah in Turkish. [figs. 166, 167] Other known yekşah bindings were made from the seventeenth to nineteenth century and it appears to be a practice typical of the Turkish bookbinding tradition."

Remarks

The study notes that different colours of leather were used to enhance the gold decoration (p. 177). The technique is specifically localized to the Turkish bookbinding tradition from the 17th to 19th centuries.
