Painter C used cinnabar for red and red lead for orange. Uniquely, red ocher was used for dark brown on tree trunks and robes (p. 209). Azurite was used for a specific blue tint (p. 209). Pink was cochineal + white lead. Dark purple was ultramarine + red lead, and violet was ultramarine + indigo (p. 210). Orpiment was used for yellow, but a 'luster yellow' was made from gold + yellow dye (p. 210). Bricks were painted with a 'soft yellow' made of yellow dye + white lead (p. 210). Water was painted using a unique combination of silver and indigo (p. 210).

Evidence

"This painter also used azurite pigment to create a blue tint next to ultramarine... But Painter C, unlike painter B, used cochineal dye instead of Indian lac... the interesting thing about this painter is that s/he used a combination of silver and indigo to paint the water in folio 7."

Remarks

Painter C's palette is significantly different from Painters A and B, notably for the use of azurite, red ocher, and the specific mixture of silver and indigo for water (p. 210).
