A method for raised, tactile writing for the blind involves forming letters from wicks (fatila) and pasting them onto the inside of the book's leather cover. These letters are then covered with another piece of paper glued on top to secure them, allowing the reader to sense the characters by touch (p. 31).

Remarks

This technique is cited as a precedent to Braille, used by the scholar Zain al-Din al-Amidi in the Mamluk period to identify books and their prices (p. 31).
