Anemone flowers (Shaqa'iq al-Nu'man) are packed into glass vials and buried in dung until they liquefy into a fermented solution. This liquid is mixed with the soot/ash of burnt paper and left to dry in the shade. Then, one dirham of this substance is mixed with one dirham of Arabic gum water and half a dirham of crushed gallnuts. The whole mixture is ground with egg white, formed into small balls (bunduq), and dried. When needed, it is reconstituted in the inkwell using chard water (p. 82-83).

"تؤخذ الشقائق فنحشى في القوارير الدقاق وتدفن في سرجين ... تذوب وتصير ماء وتنحل ، ثم تعمد إلى القراطيس فتحرقها وتجمع ما احترق منها بذلك الماء وترفعه إلى أن يجف في الظل ، ثم يؤخذ منه وزن درهم ، ومن ماء الصمغ العربى وزن درهم ومن العفص المسحوق وزن نصف درهم ، فيسحق الجميع بياض البيض ، وبينذق ، ويجفف ... ويحشى به الدواة عند الحاجة إليه مع ماء السلق وهو أجود ماء لها ."

This complex recipe combines organic plant dye extraction via fermentation with conventional soot and iron-gall-like components (p. 82-83).
