The recipe involved the preparation of paper using linen fibers, an art introduced by Chinese artisans to the northeastern provinces of the Islamic empire (p. 163).

Evidence

"At first an enterprising Chinese brought into the farthest north-eastern province of the Caliph’s empire the art of preparing paper from linen... In Samarqand this new industry reached its highest bloom and soon this city became rich and flourished through trade, where the export of paper continued to hold an outstanding position."

Remarks

The Samarqand linen paper industry was highly successful and the product was exported widely, supporting the rapid upswing of national literature and scientific studies (p. 163).
