Excavations at Shanga revealed nine phases of construction. The move from perishable materials to more solid buildings involved the use of plaster as a floor coating and later, for wall coating. Walls in Phase H were identical in plan to 9th-century versions but used double coral facing bounded with clay and coated with plaster on the external faces (p. 226).
