Described as a 'second main colour material' and used as a dye for yellow tones (p. 292). Its use in manuscript paintings became common only from the late 16th century onwards (p. 292).

Evidence

"Indian yellow is another colour that, obviously, was used only in Indian and Qazvin paintings in the late 16th century."

Remarks

The presence of Indian yellow is geographically restricted in this study to Indian and Qazvin schools (p. 292). It cannot be distinguished from other yellow dyes like saffron or turmeric by FORS alone; FOMF is required to confirm the identification (p. 296, 298).
