Remarks

The Cairo Genizah is the most impressive collection of Jewish manuscripts, containing more than 300,000 fragments. The 'classical' Genizah period (as defined by Goitein) dates from the end of the 10th century to 1265 (p. 14). While religious works (Sifrei Torah, tefillin, and ketubot) were the primary reason for the genizah's creation (p. 9), the collection includes extensive secular and documentary texts (p. 15). The fragments were initially found in a 'massive heap of crumbling paper and parchment' (p. 10). Despite their age, many fragments are in relatively good condition but required stabilization (p. 17).
