The 1349 manuscript paper is of standard thickness (10 sheets measuring 2mm) with groups of two horizontal chain lines (45mm between groups, 10mm between lines) and twenty vertical laid lines (36mm across) (p. 184). The 1351 manuscript uses two papers: the second type is shinier due to the application of size, visible through brushstrokes on the surface (p. 185).

"The 1351 manuscript contains two types of paper. [...] The second type of paper in the 1351 manuscript is a pale cream colour and noticeably shinier than the two papers previously discussed. Brushstrokes, presumably from the application of size, are visible on the paper’s surface. This second paper features horizontal laid lines only, twenty of which measure 50mm across. The most interesting feature of this paper is a watermark that occurs throughout the last quarter of the manuscript."

Remarks

The 1351 copy features an Italian watermark consisting of 'two conjoined, equally-sized circles bisected by a long vertical line' (p. 185). This suggests the paper was a widely traded commodity rather than a local product (p. 185). Marbled paper appears on much later rebinding boards of the 1351 copy (p. 186).
