Remarks

Red ink was extensively utilized in Najdi manuscripts for decorative purposes, including rubrication, geometric dots, and border filling (p. 397). It served as a secondary color to provide variety and was sometimes applied as dots at the beginning or end of lines, or as decorative fillers in geometric shapes like triangles and circles (p. 397-398). Scribes would use it to highlight titles or to separate sentences with small dots (p. 398). In some manuscripts, it was used to draw straight lines to define segments of the page (p. 399).
