Remarks

Scribes in Najd utilized local flora to produce black inks. Specifically, the Kattam plant was favored for its deep black hue (p. 154). The use of soot (dukhan) and charcoal from tree branches was also a common practice for creating the carbon-based 'Midad' used in local schools (p. 150, 153).
