Black ink recipes were extracted from diverse Arabic manuscripts, ranging from secretarial handbooks and calligraphy treatises to alchemical and astrological essays. A selection of these recipes were reproduced as samples to test their feasibility; these samples were subsequently artificially aged to simulate the condition of historical artifacts and were then analyzed using scientific methods.
