Paper (ورق) was imported into Najd from the Hijaz region by pilgrims and merchants, serving as the primary writing support (p. 202). The author notes that historical manuscripts from Najd often show significant wear and tear due to environmental and handling factors (p. 207). To prevent the complete loss of fragmented or damaged scholarly texts, pages were frequently repurposed and inserted into the structural bindings (the internal parts or 'bellies') of other manuscripts. This practice ensured that snippets of earlier scholarly work were physically preserved within the composite structure of newer bindings (p. 207).
