While the people of Najd did not manufacture paper themselves, they imported it from neighboring regions including Syria, Turkey, Hejaz, and Iraq (p. 409). They used various types and grades of paper known by different historical names such as Qartas, Kaghad, Talhiyyah, and Sajl (p. 408). The paper sizes were not standardized and varied significantly based on the source and the specific batch obtained by the copyist (p. 409).

Remarks

The lack of local paper production meant that Najdi scholars relied on trade routes. Copyists would often divide large sheets (farakh) into smaller sections to maximize use (p. 409). Some papers used were colored or tinted (p. 409). The diversity in paper names used in the region reflects a deep-rooted manuscript culture that interacted with various Islamic printing and writing centers (p. 408).
