The paper identified as European was subjected to a surface treatment intended to mimic the appearance of traditional Arabic paper. This treatment changed the visual surface characteristics (Figure 15c) and was likely done to increase commercial appeal in the Arab market (p. 50).

Evidence

"Although practically all the types of the paper tested here were identified as European, they have clearly been subjected to a treatment that made them look like Arabic paper. It is believed that this was a common practice to make the paper look more attractive for the Arab market."

Remarks

The study suggests that the presence of various treated papers and colorants implies different production techniques and sites, even if the base paper was European in origin (p. 50).
