"kagh¯ad – paper"

Remarks

The term 'kaghad' refers to paper (p. 185). A 'mistara' was a specialized tool used to prepare the paper for writing; it consisted of a board with threads that, when pressed against a folio, impressed parallel lines at equal distances to guide the scribe (p. 186). Ruling boards (mistaras) are preserved in the Wellcome collection (Caption 21, p. 194).
