The paper used in BnF Arabe 5502 is described as a large-format variety (ca. 30x19 cm) which allowed the full watermark to be preserved and visible (p. 60). The watermark includes a central design of a scroll/armor with stars and a goat, accompanied by the letters 'GL' and a countermark identifying 'LEVERATTO' (p. 60).

Evidence

"A second watermark... appears in the manuscript BnF Arabe 5502, ff 1a–207b... It depicts n armor or a scroll with three six-pointed stars and an animal (goat?). The letters ‘GL’ are positioned underneath. The countermark in the sheet’s middle indicates the name ‘LEVERATTO’. Equivalent to this is Heawood’s ‘scroll-work’ (n.3739), found in paper used in 1796, Spain, and in 1810, Italy."

Remarks

The LEVERATTO watermark is a known marker of late 18th to early 19th-century paper manufacture, with exact matches found in Spanish (1796) and Italian (1810) contexts (p. 60). The manuscript unit contains a variety of papers, and some pages (ff. 111b-118b) also feature the 'JB' watermark (p. 64).
