Remarks

The object is a Qajar period pencase (qalamdan) made of wood and finished with lacquer (p. 166). Lacquered items of this period commonly used a series of oil-based varnishes or sandarac/linseed oil mixtures to protect the fine polychrome paintings underneath. The pencase itself is a container for reed pens and inkwells.
