The object is a Qajar lacquered wooden pencase (AIA.0276.0000). The medium of lacquered wood involves pictorial expression that matured in the Safavid and Qajar periods (p. 115). It features frames painted in gold on a black background and an interior with a red background decorated with gold vegetal scrolls (p. 115).
