The paper is used within the mechanism of the Andalusian 'Candle Clock with Twelve Doors'. As the candle burns and releases pegs from the wax, a counterweight system pulls another peg, releasing a lattice and allowing a rolled up scrap of paper containing verses to be revealed in one of the clock's twelve doors to indicate the hour of the night (p. 97).

Remarks

The description pertains to a clock displayed in 763/1362 by Muhammad V, the Nasrid ruler of Granada. The clock was designed for night hours, using paper as a mechanical signaling medium to show verses related to the elapsed time (p. 97).
