Remarks

In the context of nineteenth-century Christian missionary activities in the Mediterranean, William Jowett, the Superintendent of the British Church Missionary Society (CMS) press in Malta, recognized that material factors were paramount for audience acceptance (p. 40). He argued that for missionary texts to be accepted by readers in the Arabic script world, the physical substrate—the kind of paper—needed to conform to the tactile and visual expectations established by centuries of manuscript tradition (p. 40, Note 59).
