Remarks

The document is a critical edition of a 9th-century (3rd Hijri) treatise on eloquence and the technical tools of writing (أدوات الكتابة) by the Abbasid scribe Al-Shaybani. The editor, Abbas Arhila, identifies a unique surviving manuscript from the collection of Tahir al-Jaza'iri, now housed in the Taymuriyya collection of the Egyptian National Library (shelf mark 80 Majami'). This manuscript serves as the primary material evidence for the text. The work reflects the administrative culture of the Abbasid state, particularly the tools used by 'Katibs' (scribes) in the diwans. (p. 17, 18)
