The model utilizes paper as a substrate for the graduated scales and projection of the planispheric astrolabe, which is then mounted onto a wooden staff (p. 134). The original invention of this instrument type is attributed to the 13th-century mathematician Sharafaddin al-Muzaffar b. Muhammad b. al-Muzaffar at-Tusi (d. after 606/1209).
