Preparation Steps

Take half a *mithqal* of sal ammoniac and melt it as it is, then cast upon it the weight of a dirham of *Khawlan*, which is *Al-Hadhid*. Then leave it for twenty days in the sun. Then boil it with gallnuts, then mix with it the weight of two dirhams of mercury and leave it for forty days. Then cast upon it the weight of ten dirhams of sour milk and write with it; it will not be read except at night and in the dark.
