Remarks
In the 11th century, paper was significantly cheaper than parchment. Traveler Nasir-i Khosrau noted in 1046 that in Cairo, paper was so cheap it was used by merchants to wrap goods (p. xxviii, note 24). Most legal documents were on paper, except high-value contracts or Ketubot (marriage contracts), which favored parchment for longevity (p. xxviii). Responsa and poems (piyyutim) were also often written on paper (p. xxviii).
