The reference material is a commercial filter paper (Whatman No. 40) produced from cotton linters and is composed exclusively of cellulose (Section 2.1). It has an initial grammage of 95 g/m2 and a thickness of 210 ± 10 μm (Table 1). Its initial pH is 5.7 ± 0.2 (Table 1).

Remarks

Used as an acidic cotton paper reference in the study. Its degradation follows a constant scission rate (order 1 according to the Ekenstam equation) when LODP is not reached (Section 3.2). In humid air conditions at 90°C, the degree of polymerisation (DPn) decreased by 60 % in 10 weeks, reaching a levelling-off degree of polymerisation (LODP) plateau value of approximately 90 (Section 3.2). Yellowing trends were observed in humid conditions, while dry air conditions led to greening of the paper (Section 3.3.3, Section 4).
