Finely grind a quantity of glass (زجاج). Add water until it reaches a paste-like consistency, then wash it repeatedly until the black impurities are removed and the glass is pure. Place it in a wide-mouthed bottle. Add Arabic gum (صمغ عربى) and wine vinegar (خل خمر). Hang the mixture in the sun for seven days during summer (or longer in winter). Shake the bottle daily. When ready to use, stir the glass sediment and write using a copper pen (بقلم نحاس) (p. 88).

"خذ شيئا من الزجاج واسحقه ناعما واسقه الماء حتى يصير مثل العجين ثم اغسله حتى يذهب سواده ويخلص الزجاج ، فاجعله فى قارورة واسعة الفم ، واجعل فيه شيئاً من صمغ عربى وخل خمر ، وعلقه فى الشمس سبعة أيام فى الصيف ... فإذا أردت أن تكتب به فحرك الزجاج واستمد بقلم نحاس"

Remarks

The use of vinegar and prolonged sun exposure suggests a chemical maturation process. The use of a copper pen is specific to the abrasive nature of the ground glass (p. 88).
