"In five instances the inside of the board consists of a painted surface. Presumably this painted layer is applied to a thin ground of gesso... Fig. 137. Or. 11.957 (eighteenth century, Persia). A partial leather binding with lacquered boards."

Remarks

The paint layer is applied directly to a thin ground of gesso on the inside of the boards. No paper fibers are visible underneath the paint (p. 148). This is frequently found in Persian lacquered bindings of the 18th century (p. 145).
